Quizzes and exercises

We will have roughly one short in-class quiz every second or third lecture. In addition, we might have a small number of exercises to turn in during the semester (anywhere between 0 and 5).

My apologies if the rules and penalties below seem a little harsh. But please remember that with 300 students submitting exercises, we must all do what we can to get them graded smoothly and efficiently.

Format for quiz answers:

• We'll use index cards for quizzes. Students must put the following on cards they submit for grading:
  • Their first and last name (top left)
  • Their student ID number (top right)
  • Their answers, in nice big (1-inch) letters, side-by-side
• Students will receive two points for submitting a correctly formatted answer card and one point for each correct answer.

Format for submitted exercises: If we do have any exercises to submit during the semester, the following guidelines apply:

• Each page must include your first and last name and student ID number at the top.
• Separate pages must be stapled together.
• All submissions must be on 8 1/2 x 11" paper (usually from a printer). If you submit answers written on your own paper, use loose-leaf paper. Do not use paper torn from spiral notebooks (it doesn't stack).

Late policy for exercises:

• This policy will only apply to exercises (if we have any). Quizzes can never be submitted late.
• Exercises will be due by the end of class on the due date.
• Exercise grades will be penalized 10% per day late. Weekends and vacations do not count as days late.
• Submissions will not be accepted for any score once the exercise has been graded and returned to class, which will usually be within a week of the submission date.

Dropped exercise and quiz grades:

• The lowest quiz grades will be dropped before determining a student's average. The number of dropped quiz grades will most likely be two, but it will depend on the number of quizzes given over the semester.
• It is unlikely that we will have enough exercises to drop one of the exercise grades.
• No grades will be replaced or made up for any reason.
