Quizzes and exercises

We will have roughly one short in-class quiz every second or third lecture. In addition, we might have a small number of exercises to turn in during the semester (anywhere between 0 and 5).

My apologies if the rules and penalties below seem a little harsh. But please remember that with 300 students submitting exercises, we must all do what we can to get them graded smoothly and efficiently.

Academic integrity

All students are expected to abide by the University of North Carolina's Honor Code, as described on the website of the Office of Student Conduct

To get right to the point, UNC students pledge "not to lie, cheat, or steal." In class, the Honor Code means academic integrity, which means that all work each student submits for a grade must be his or her own.

While we will not have a lot of exercises to submit in this class, these guidelines will generally apply to work for other classes. Students are encouraged to work and study together. It is perfectly reasonable for students to discuss questions before answering them, but they must answer independently. Copying is not only a violation of the Honor Code, but it short-circuits the entire point of homework, which is to get students thinking about difficult concepts so that they can understand them and apply them, especially on exams. And besides, it's much easier for us to spot copied work than students might think.

Students should be aware of the following UNC deadlines:
