Scientists have lives, too!

(well, some of the time.)

Where am I from?

People often ask me this question. My usual response goes something like this...

Where am I now?

I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, these days.

What do I do for fun?

These days, my life revolves around two things. First, there's my family, which includes my wife Caren and my daughters Abby Ruth and Zoe Ellen. And second, there's my work. While Caren and I both devote a lot of energy to our careers, we have been able to mix them with travel. From July, 1997 to the end of 1998, we both conducted our research in Australia, which was a lot of fun. My job has taken me to many other wonderful places as well.

When I do find some personal time, I entertain myself by playing ultimate frisbee, cycling, and reading. I read more non-fiction than fiction, although I occasionally make forays into historical fiction. A past favorite is Patrick O'Brian's naval series. Among other things, I read a fair bit of military history, and the history of science, and even have some comments about the philosophy of science and pseudoscience. A newer interest, perhaps a sign of my getting older, is a family history.

I don't watch much TV these days, but I do have a few links to old favorites you might want to check out.

And I think that National Public Radio is a great thing, and not just because of Car Talk. Even though it's been a decade since I spent a year and a half in Australia, I still haven't forgotten how much I missed having NPR to listen there.
