Military history
Useful military history references:
I pretend to be an amateur historian sometimes. I'm mainly
interested in the involvement of the Western Allies, particularly the
United States and the British Commonwealth, in World War II.
Some of the questions I'm interested in:
- How did the U.S. manage to raise such a large and (more or less)
efficient army from the tiny underfunded force of the depression years?
- How did the U.S. involvement in World War II lead to its role
as a superpower and cold-war combatant?
- How did the British Commonwealth contribute to the war effort? Together,
the U.K. and the British Empire fielded an army as large as the U.S. Army,
yet in the U.S. there aren't a lot of books or interest in this army or what
it did.
- How did the U.S. lead in science and technology before the war
contribute to its success during the war?
- What effect did World War II and the Cold War have on how the U.S.
government funds science research?
- How did World War II hasten the end of colonial empires and the
rise of modern imperialism? And what impact did the arming of the
colonies in Africa and Asia have on the development of the Third World
during the Cold War years?
