Announcements:
- Exam 2 is today during regular class time: Chapters
7-12.
Results:
- This exam was more challenging than it should have been
(my fault), and so I will grade this exam out of 95 points instead of 100 and
still provide an extra 5 points for students who submit Test Corrections
as for Exam 1 (see below).
- Exam scores for the multiple-choice section should
be available via the onyen
or Connect Carolina websites if you filled in you PID on the Scantron form. Adjusted scores will be posted on
Blackboard.
- Summary of results from MC section:
- Average = 56%
(compared with 61% for Exam 1 and ~60% on this exam in previous years)
- Std. Dev. = 16%
- High = 88%
- Low = 16% (expected score for random guessing
is 26%)
- The total Exam 2 score will include 75 points for the
MC section plus 25 points for the Flywheel RWP.
- With extra credit, the average score on this exam will
likely be ~70% (same as Exam 1), with highest score of ~100%. The
maximum possible score is 115/95 = 120% with original RWP.
- Since the class average on this exam was lower than I
expected, you have an opportunity to boost your grade and learn from your
mistakes through Test Corrections:
- Provide written
justification (preferably on your original test papers - use back sides
or other paper as needed) to demonstrate that you understand each
question you missed (or questions you happened to get right because you
guessed correctly).
- Discuss your
explanations with someone who understands at least as much physics as you
do. Have this person sign the following statement at the top of
your test paper: “I am convinced that [your name] fully understands the
concepts and problem solutions for this exam.” Signed
____________ Hopefully by
discussing your answers with another person, you will better understand
and remember the correct reasoning in case you are faced with a similar
question on the final exam or later in life.
- Submit your original
test papers with corrections by Thursday, June 9 (one week after the
exam), and assuming that your explanations are all correct, 5 points
will be added to your exam score.
- Answers
to multiple-choice questions:
- Version 101: C, C, C,
B, D, B, A, B, B, C, C, B, D, C, D, C, C, C, C, C, C, A, C, A, D
- Version 102: C, C, C,
B, B, D, B, A, B, C, C, D, B, D, C, C, C, C, C, C, A, C, D, A, C
- For the flywheel real-world
problem, only a couple of students signed the honor pledge. Remember
that you were not allowed to discuss this problem with anyone else (other
than Dr. Deardorff). I have learned that at
least one student sought advice on this problem from a private tutor, and
this is a clear violation of the Honor Code. You will only receive credit
on this problem if you attest that the work you submitted is your own and
that you did not receive any unauthorized assistance on this problem.
