STRINGED INSTRUMENTS
FALL 2008
We can classify the stringed instruments made by the class in Fall 2008 according to the conventional instruments they most resemble.
Lutes
Nick Eakes called
his instrument the Tysonophone.It is played with a slide like a pedal steel
guitar.
Sonya Rice's Sneezonator uses a tissue box for
the body.
Nick
Beeson's Classitar
combines a metal tissue box with a classical guitar neck.
Madison
Bullard used an electromagnetic driver to vibrate the drone string of his Dronophone while
he played the other string with a slide.It sounds rather like a sitar.
Jordan
Best's Canjo
has a paint can for a resonator and a cardboard top and bridge.The strings are weed trimmer string, rubber
bands, and cotton string. Nails in the
can give a buzzing effect to some of the strings.
Sam
Kritchevsky used a pencil for the soundpost
of his Viol da
Squeeze.You have to squeeze the
instrument with your elbow to hold it together.
Quetrell Hayward used a broom for the neck of his Q-tar.
An
ax handle provides the neck for Ford Combs' Ax.
Jeff
O'Regan made his Umbrola from a shoebox and lots
of duct tape.
The
Siren that Clarke Gottwald
made has a firefighter's hat for a resonating chamber.
Harps
Maggie Attayak made
Bings from different
sizes of soda bottles..
Amanda Makarevich
made liberal use of pencils in making her Bottle
Board Guitar.
The
Elastico
made by Sami Card uses rubber bands for the strings.
Derek
Svendsen's Quatrocord does not have a resonating chamber, rather like
the 2x4 cello.
Austin
Conklin used a lot of pushpins in making the Cardboard Conundrum.
The
two pieces of Alex Jakubsen's Stretch Harp (or Warble Harp)
are not connected to each other.
Hannah
Gavin's diminutive Rickish
uses hair elastics for strings and has an adjustable bridge.

by itself.
