Department of Physics and Astronomy
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Program
Spring 2010

Did you enjoy and do well in PHYS 116 and 117?
Did you find yourself helping your classmates with their homework?
Do you like helping your fellow students to learn a subject you enjoy?
Would you like to get paid to do that?

Maybe you should become an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant!!

Undergraduate Teaching Assistants (UTAs) can have a variety of paid positions including Supplemental Instruction Leader, Lab Assistant, Demonstration Assistant, and Learning Assistant. Learning Assistants will work with graduate teaching assistants in the weekly recitation sections of PHYS 116 and 117, helping small groups of students as they work problems related to the weekly course topics. Other assignment descriptions can be found at this site. UTAs receive training in effective teaching techniques by enrolling in the 1-credit course PHYS 510 "Physics/Astronomy TA Seminar" and attending weekly meetings with the faculty and other TAs. UTAs who wish to continue to deepen their knowledge of teaching in the Spring semester can enroll instead in the 4-credit course PHYS 410 "Teaching and Learning Physics," which counts as a physics elective for the physics major requirements and fulfills the Experiential Education (EE) general education requirement.

To apply to become a UTA, download this form, fill it out, and e-mail it to Dr. Alice Churukian. The deadline for applications for the Spring 2010 semester is December 1, 2009.

For more information contact Dr. Alice Churukian.

For information about other paid positions in the Physics & Astronomy Department (including graders, laboratory and demonstration assistants, and Supplemental Instruction leaders), see the TA home page.
